Social Media for Environmental Protection

Earlier this year there was a forest fire in Riau, Indonesia. This forest fire since then has affected other countries such as Singapore. Throughout this week, Singapore is choked with thick/dense haze and the haze is now reaching unhealthy levels. To combat the forest fire, activists helps out the locals. Of course helping the locals is not an easy or cheap thing to do, thus activists reach out to the people around the world through social media so that the activists will receive donations to help out the locals. Usually through the social media, activists will reach  out through social media by posting about the forest fire in order to spread the awareness of this event, they then will get more people to help them combat the forest fire or they will receive resources essential for the locals to thrive and survive.

According to a Huffington Post article posted in 2017, Social Media can be a perfect tool for crowd gathering by supporting and spreading the awareness and messages in a rapid and dynamic format, Social media can also be used as a pressure point to prompt and encourage support during specific campaigns. Similarly, it existences has also allowed Individuals to track and share information regarding both their local environment and also the Global situations as well.

Similarly, advancement of Technology allowed for Nonprofits organization such as ACT to spread campaign messages regarding how Individual Citizens can both donate and spread awareness through canal of Social Media. Transparency of the Internet allows Organizations such as ACT to relay details and Hashtags to be shared as a method to spread awareness, for example the campaign pictured shared by ACT in the Website Kitabisa.com, a nonprofit fund gathering website aimed to raise awareness.

Kitabisa.com is one of the popular fundraising platform in Indonesia. This platform is formed since the 2013 and being the witness that Indonesia has a lot of good and caring people. This platform has been connected more than a million people in Indonesia and donated more than 500.000.000.000 ( five hundred billion )rupiah for the people who needed donation and help. Why we say in the previous paragraph that social media can be a perfect tool because people these days are extremely busy with their own bussiness and have a limited time to do something else. But, they also use social media as a platform to seeking some ideas even to release their stress. So, this is the right place for fundraising because people can just click the link and they can just donate in a simple way without having to come to the donation place or institution.

Indonesia’s fire forest have been increasing since 1990, and in 2019 there are several accident like el nino phenomena, dry season period, or maybe an illegaly set to burn the land  that intended for palm cultivation, so that the factor that cause our land in fire even more. The government has been working to prevent more wildfire but it is still not enough. So the why don’t we help them? We consist of many people, especially youth that can contribute to help deforestasion problem. In this era of course we can contribute digitally through social media by donate them in some insituition like we mentioned before. By donating we can help the victim with money and their needs or maybe we could make a better infrastucture that destroyed. We wish that anyone who get involved in this disaster will regret it and people find out that having some sympathy is important. If it not us who make an action then who else?
